The Story Behind DamSolutions
DamSolutions AS was founded in 2025 by Thomas Konow and Rune Øynes after recognising the need for a simple, functional, and user-friendly tool for analysing the stability of concrete dams.
The software has been developed through an iterative, research-based process in which engineering model development and software development have progressed in parallel, with continuous validation throughout the project. A key principle has been the establishment of a digital twin framework consisting of:
An advanced spreadsheet model (engineering reference model) containing all relevant formulas, load models, design criteria, and calculation procedures in accordance with current regulations issued by the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate (NVE).
A software implementation (web-based application) in which the same regulations and calculation methods are implemented as algorithms.
This approach has enabled the calculations to be documented and verified through two independent methods throughout the entire development process. The result is a significant reduction in the risk of errors while enhancing quality, consistency and traceability.
The project is organized around close collaboration between the engineering lead responsible for computational modeling and the software developer responsible for implementation. This methodology is widely used in the development of advanced engineering analysis tools, where both technical accuracy and software quality are essential for delivering a robust and reliable final product

Who We Are
Thomas Konow
With more than three decades of experience in dam engineering and dam safety, Thomas Konow brings extensive expertise in both dam safety regulations and practical stability assessment of concrete dams.
His background includes 11 years with the Norwegian dam safety authority (NVE), 16 years as an NVE-approved consultant for concrete and masonry dams, and his current role as Dam Safety Manager (VTA) for Å Energi Vannkraft's dams in the Drammen River basin.
Thomas combines regulatory insight, engineering expertise, and practical dam safety experience, providing the technical foundation for the development of DamSolutions. The software has been developed in his personal time, driven by a vision to make dam stability analysis more efficient, transparent, and reliable.
Rune Øynes
Rune Øynes is the Lead Software Developer responsible for the design and implementation of the DamSolutions platform.
He has more than 30 years of experience in software development, with expertise spanning frontend development, backend development, and database systems. Throughout his career, he has held leadership positions, including serving as Chief Executive Officer of AskerData AS and Espero AS.
Rune possesses extensive experience in managing complex software projects involving multiple stakeholders, as well as delivering smaller development projects from concept and design through implementation and deployment.
His combination of technical expertise, project management experience, and software architecture knowledge has been instrumental in transforming the engineering concepts behind DamSolutions into a robust, user-friendly, and reliable web-based application.
